How Do You Make Tortillas From Scratch?

Making tortillas from scratch is a whole lot easier than it sounds. Believe me, I love to cook and at first even I was a bit intimated by the idea. But when using this recipe you’ll be amazed at just how happy you are to make another batch of these 3 ingredient oat flour tortillas. This recipe is so easy and you probably already have everything you need in your pantry. Go check and I’ll be here when you get back.

Is It Cheaper To Make Your Own Tortillas?

Making your own tortillas can be very cost effective. Especially when using only three ingredients. For example, this oat flour costs $3.29 and you can make about 3 batches of 6 – 8 tortillas. Comparatively, Siete’s Almond Flour tortillas cost $8.29 for a pack of 8. Definitely, a a huge difference.

Can You Make Tortillas With All Purpose Flour?

Absolutely! But for healthier tortillas it is suggested you use the following subsitutes:

  • Oat Flour
  • Almond Flour
  • Cassava Flour
  • Chickpea Flour
  • Whole Wheat Flour

And more! Basically, use any flour which contains whole grains and more nutrients than bleached all purpose flour which contains very little (if any) nutrients. Don’t forget to glow, we need to nourish!

How To Make These Healthy 3 Ingredient Oat Flour Tortillas

First what you’ll want to do is whisk together the oat flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. It is best to sift the ingredients together prior to whisking. This will ensure when you mix your dough it is nice and evenly uniformed. No lumps.

Next slowly add water, in batches, to the mixing bowl, stirring as you go. Again, stirring in a few steps vs pouring the water all in will make sure the batter is evenly mixed. These are tortillas and forgive me for saying it, but, the less lumps the better.

Once the dough comes together, gather the dough together into a ball. Then, sprinkling some oat flour onto a clean surface, knead the dough about 15 times. Shape the dough into a small log. Cut the log into 6 to 8 slices and form each slice into a ball. Add balls to a plate or bowl and loosely cover with plastic wrap. Allowing the dough to rest for about 10 – 15 minutes.

Next, using a rolling pin, flatten out the dough until it becomes the shape of a tortilla. Add to a cast iron skillet and heat on both sides for about 30 – 35 seconds. Once cooked, add tortillas to a steamer until ready to serve.
